Stewart Boyce of Fairhaven Golf Club was crowned Srixon Amateur Champion this week at the stunning Celtic Manor, home of the 2010 Ryder Cup.
Boyce topped the final leaderboard with a nett Stableford score of 33 points enjoying a beautiful day on the extremely picturesque but challenging Twenty Ten Course.
The event was a special occasion, marking the 10th anniversary of Srixon’s sponsorship and to celebrate the milestone, the sponsors went above and beyond to make it memorable. Their Tour Truck was on-site, giving competitors a rare opportunity to see inside during check-in. Participants were also treated to goody bags and received a custom-stamped wedge, a great keepsake from the event.
Stewart who qualified by winning the Fairhaven Club Medal in June said “It has been fantastic to play in such a great event and to win is amazing. I think I was on the first leaderboard that came out, so I was keeping a close track of it and thankfully didn’t get knocked off the top twenty.
“Thanks to everyone involved in organising the event it has been a great experience.”
The team event, awarded to the Pro and Amateur with the highest combined Stableford score was won by Christopher Rae of Tyneside Golf Club and TGI Partner Phil Waugh, with a score of 56 points.
Phil said “It has been a great event at a fantastic venue. I’d never played here before, so I thoroughly enjoyed it, and my amateur, Chris absolutely loved it.
“It felt almost like a mini Tour event for him, seeing inside the Tour Truck, receiving the goody bag, and getting his stamped wedge.
‘I’ve been lucky enough to attend a couple of other Amateur Championship Finals, and they’re always extremely well organised by TGI and the support from Srixon is incredibly generous. I’d definitely encourage other TGI Partners to get involved in future. It created a real buzz around the club when Chris appeared on the leaderboard, we were able to share it on the club’s social media, and all his mates were getting behind him, which was great.
“Thanks to the TGI team for another memorable event.”
The title of Srixon Amateur Champion goes to the top amateur golfer among TGI Golf Partner venues, giving Partners the chance to offer their members great golfing experience.
In association with Srixon, prizes are supplied to Partners to hold a monthly medal as an Amateur Championship qualifier. Winners from these events are then placed on a national leaderboard, with the leading 20 amateurs earning a place in the Grand Final, competing alongside their Pro for the coveted title.
TGI Golf Managing Director, Adele McLean said “Celebrating the 10th year of the Srixon Amateur Championship is a proud moment for everyone involved and very fitting we played the final at Celtic Manor almost 15 years to the day The Ryder Cup was staged there.
“Over the years, the event has grown and become a real highlight in the calendar, so I’d like to thank to all the amateurs who took part in the qualifiers as well as our TGI Partners who hosted the events.
‘A huge thank you also, to our long-standing partner Srixon for their incredible support in sponsoring the medals, hosting the final and supplying goody bags and some fantastic prizes. Having the Tour Truck at Celtic Manor with us was a fantastic experience for all our competitors and helped make a really memorable day.
“Congratulations to all our winners on the day, your performances really captured the spirit of the Championship. Here’s to the next 10 years!"
Gareth Taylor, Head of UK & Ireland Sales, Srixon Sports Europe added
“The Amateur Championship has been a tremendous success, and we’re incredibly proud of how it continues to grow year after year. The support we’ve had from TGI, the TGI Partners, and the amateurs themselves has been outstanding.
“Their passion and commitment are what make this event so special, and it’s that collective effort which creates such a memorable experience for everyone involved."
