Hollinwell Golf Club Pro Mike Bradley scored a double this week when he claimed individual and team victories as the TGI Golf Travel Masters made a welcome return to the Portuguese sunshine.
The event, in association with Titleist and FootJoy was cancelled in 2020, but returned to the stunning Penina Hotel and Golf Resort, with 13 teams battling it out for the prizes.
Bradley led his team to a six point victory in the team event, with John Fisher’s Huyton & Prescot GC team in second and Paul Jamieson and his team from Dunblane New GC finishing third.
In the individual event Bradley shot rounds of 35 and 42 points to win by five points from Nic Gilks (Coventry GC) in second place and Rhos-on-Sea PGA Pro Lee Harpin in third.
Played over 36-holes on the Championship Course at Penina it proved to be a winner for everyone involved, not just those that featured in the prizes.
The teams were met with perfect weather conditions of sunshine and temperatures in the low 20s over the week. A practice round on Monday was followed by a welcome meeting with the TGI Team which set the competitors up for the main event over the two days ahead.
On the prize list were novelty prizes for amateurs, an Individual Pros Prize and the one everyone had their eyes on - the Team Prize, the format being two from four scores to count for the team event and stableford for the individual pros prize.
With the fantastic weather and early tee times, competitors were free to hit the range, take in the nearby town of Alvor or enjoy lunch and a few drinks at the hotel after their round.
TGI Golf Group Services Director, Adele McLean said: “This has been a great few days for our Partners and their guests especially after the past 18 months. The weather has been perfect and the atmosphere has been great, everyone involved seems to be delighted to be back to travelling and enjoying what we all took for granted before the pandemic.
"We'd like to thank everyone who attended and event sponsors Titleist and FootJoy for everything they have done for the event.”
After a great few days of golf and a number of prizes in the bag, Mike Bradley, added: “This has been a great event, I have loved it, the guys have loved it. The venue is ideal - it’s a course that I really enjoy playing, the food has been great and the organisation has been spot on.
“Four days away at this time of year is really enjoyable and events like this really help to build relationships with members, the weather was perfect and we played some great golf. Although as a team, we knew we would have a good time regardless of where we finished, to come away with the prizes that we did and win the team event was fantastic. It really was great to see the team from TGI Golf and TGI Golf Travel back to organising and hosting this type of event and doing what they do so well.”
